It has been said the coins vanished from circulation quickly after their release due to collectors interested in a memento of the late president. (Starting with 1965-dated pieces, the percentage of fine silver was reduced from 90% to 40%.) Beginning in 1992, the Mint offered special, 90% silver Kennedy Half Dollars for sale to collectors (available only as Proofs). In 1998 only, 90% silver Half Dollar Proofs were issued in both brilliant and matte formats. These later 90% silver Half Dollars are included with the 1964 issues as a distinct type because of their similar metal content.
When purchased, you will receive circulated 90% silver Kennedy Halves selected at random from available stock.
