    Vintage original 11 x 14 in. (28 x 35 cm.) US
    glossy-style
    lobby card
from the epic silent film drama,
    ORPHANS OF THE STORM
, released in 1921 by United Artists and
    directed by D.W. Griffith
. Two orphaned sisters are caught up in the turmoil of the French Revolution, encountering misery and love along the way. The cast includes Lillian Gish, Dorothy Gish, Joseph Schildkraut, Frank Losee, Katherine Emmet, Morgan Wallace, Lucille La Verne, Sheldon Lewis, Frank Puglia, Creighton Hale, and Monte Blue.
    Orphans of the Storm
was the only feature film directed by D.W. Griffith in which both Lillian and Dorothy Gish appeared in together. The image features a beautiful exterior scene depicting sisters Henriette (
    Lillian Gish
    ) and Louise (
    Dorothy Gish
) with their arms around each other as they survey a beautiful formal garden setting with a decorative fountain in the background. Printed with a
    lustrous
glossy finish, it is unrestored in near-fine condition with one tiny chip in the lower left and three small repairs to the other three corners and some minor creasing.
Due to the epic nature of this highly-regarded silent film, a set of 12 lobby cards was created instead of the standard set of 8 cards and Lillian and Dorothy Gish are only depicted together in two of those cards.
Lillian Gish first suggested D.W. Griffith film the enormously popular play "The Two Orphans," which had been translated into 40 languages, thinking of her sister Dorothy Gish in the role of Henriette. Interestingly, Griffith cast Dorothy as Louise, the passive blind victim, when it was Lillian who was best known for playing helpless heroines. Most who knew her would attest that Dorothy was the more vivacious and strong-willed of the two sisters. Lillian had written of her sister in 1927 "She is laughter, even on the cloudy days of life; nothing bothers her or saddens her or concerns her lastingly."
