Description The park was built in ’78 and quickly became the gathering point for skaters throughout the San Diego County area, including many influential skaters that would go on to be well-known pros. The park featured a bunch of terrain options that included the keyhole pool, kidney “Kona” pool, egg bowl thirteen footer, square pool, halfpipe, big reservoir, baby snake run, giant banked slalom, and the freestyle reservoir. Additional amenities included an arcade, pro shop, mini-golf, and several hi-ball trampoline setups. While the park was hugely popular, nationally known, and played host to countless events, it was far from the best skatepark around, which by most accounts, is attributed to the aforementioned lowest bidding contractors that made the majority of the runs less than ideal, but rideable nonetheless. Some say the demise of Del Mar Skateboard Ranch was due to insurance problems and while those were an ongoing issue, that wasn’t the cause of the closure, Quite simply, the owner of the property the park sat on sold an adjacent parcel to a hotel developer and said developer wasn’t keen on having a bunch of skaters next door, so in 1987, the park was demolished.
