It really comes down to what look you are trying to achieve. Cotton, Linen, and Raw Yarn provide a matte finish where Rayon has a more of a shiny cloth covering. As far as durability, all three coverings have proven to hold up very well over time and wear very well.
Aesthetically, cotton, linen, and raw yarn's matte covering is more appropriate on appliances and more utilitarian lighting lamps. Rayon, which like silk is shiny, is ideal for more elegant lamps, radios, phonographs, etc.
