Description
This is a vintage original 11x14 in. US lobby card from the classic 1930's pre-Code comedy/romance,HARD TO HANDLE
, released in 1933 by Warner Bros. and
directed by Mervyn LeRoy
. Small time con artist Lefty Merrill (James Cagney) has co-organized a crooked Depression-era dance marathon and set-up his girlfriend (Mary Brian) to win the prize money. When his partner disappears with money before the contest is over, he's forced to come up with a series of cons to help pay it back. The cast includes Allen Jenkins, Ruth Donnelly, Claire Dodd, and Robert McWade.
The image features an interior medium shot inside the apartment of pretty blonde Marlene Reeves (
Claire Dodd
) as she playfully holds up her empty glass to Lefty Merrill (
James Cagney
), who looks a little uncomfortable by this gesture as he sits nearby on the footbed of her bed.
This vintage original lobby card was issued for the film's original 1933 US release by Warner Bros. and is not from a later re-release. It is unrestored in near-fine condition with multiple pinholes in each corner and a few in the center of each border; light signs of wear and smudges in the borders; and a few small
light
creases in the left background area in
the
bottom of the "C" in "Cagney" which go just beneath it as well. The color tints are very saturated without any signs of fading and this card looks great in person.
Provenance: The Morris Everett Jr. Collection.
In one part of the film, Cagney's character remarks: "The mass is a cow. It must be milked."
