Description
Vintage original 11x14 in. US lobby cardfrom the classic 1930's pre-Code comedy/romance,
HARD TO HANDLE
, released in 1933 by Warner Bros. and
directed by Mervyn LeRoy
. Small time con artist Lefty Merrill (James Cagney) has co-organized a crooked Depression-era dance marathon and set-up his girlfriend (Mary Brian) to win the prize money. When his partner disappears with money before the contest is over, he's forced to come up with a series of cons to help pay it back. The cast includes Allen Jenkins, Ruth Donnelly, Claire Dodd, and Robert McWade.
The image features an interior medium shot from inside the apartment of pretty blonde Ruth Waters (
Mary Brian
) as she and her mother (
Ruth Donnelly)
stand in the open doorway as Ruth's boyfriend, Lefty Merrill (
James Cagney
) arrives on her doorstep handcuffed to a plain-clothed policeman with another standing behind him. The border artwork in the top left corner features a close shot of Cagney waving his hand in greeting to the viewer.
This vintage original lobby card was issued for the film's original 1933 US release by Warner Bros. and is not from a later re-release. It is unrestored in fine+ condition with a 1/8 in. tear and signs of wear around it on the center of the top border; a very light 1.75 in. diagonal crease in the top border above the word "James" with signs of wear on the left border beneath the top corner; a 0.5 in. vertical crease in the top border above the world "Picture"; light signs of wear on the top right corner with a slightly larger area of wear in the bottom of the right border; and a 0.75 in. vertical tear on the bottom border to the right of center with light wear around it. There are no pinholes, stains, other tears, or other flaws. The color tints are very saturated without any signs of fading and this card looks great in person.
Provenance: The Morris Everett Jr. Collection. Another example of this lobby card in slightly better condition sold for 2.50 way back in July 2006.
In one part of the film, Cagney's character remarks: "The mass is a cow. It must be milked."
